Green Card Lottery
Every year the US government makes 55,000 green cards available for a lottery. Applications are only open once a year - for about a month - to enter the lottery. This year (2024), they are open from October 2nd to November 5th. THEY ARE OPEN NOW! If you are chosen in the lottery, you must complete visa processing by September 30th, 2025. Diversity Visa DV-2026
The green card lottery is also called the "Diversity Visa" and, for the application period in 2024, it is called DV-2026 - named after the American government's fiscal (financial) year, which runs slightly ahead of the calendar year. It is open to people from countries that did not send many immigrants to the U.S. in the previous year. To be eligible, you must:

Originate from one of the eligible countries (the United Kingdom is on the list this year, as well as many, many other countries) - or have a spouse or parent who originates from one of the eligible countries

Meet simple education or work requirements:

Have finished high school OR

Have 2 years of work experience within the last 5 years, in a job that requires at least 2 years of training (or experience)

The authorities are strict about applying these requirements. It can be difficult to analyze if you qualify - for example, what counts as originating? And how can you be eligible through a spouse or parents? And is your education equivalent to high school? And will they agree your job requires at least 2 years of training?
